Professional coaching is increasingly being utilized by physicians due to its unique approach that is separate from mentoring, supporting counseling or therapy. There is an emerging body of evidence demonstrating the effectiveness of coaching in decreasing burnout and increasing wellness.

Importantly, there is a growing interest in coaching medical learners. One-third of American medical schools already have established coaching programs with the goals of ensuring the medical learner is actively involved in their learning process and promoting the skills that are invaluable to a successful and healthy career in medicine. Skills that include the development of habits such as self-reflection and life-long learning. (1, 2,3)

Furthermore, as the process of coaching promotes self-awareness, value-based goal creation and a strengths-based mindset, it positions itself as an important support in physician leadership.
