Description:
Primary care and family medicine leadership is important to the success of health systems globally. International family medicine participants of the DFCM’s Toronto International Program: Strengthening Family Medicine and Primary Care, consistently value the didactic sessions offered under the category “Family Physician Leadership”. Within these sessions, participants consistently request more content and teaching focused on supporting women family physicians who are taking on larger roles in leadership globally. While more women are practicing family medicine than ever before, many female physicians face gender-based barriers to professional and academic success and a lack of support in leadership positions.
This session is co-created by DFCM faculty and international women leaders in family medicine and aims to explore the experiences, perspectives, and strategies of workshop participants that have successfully supported leadership in clinical, health system, and academic settings. By identifying common barriers and shared opportunities specific to women family physicians, we aim to discuss, “are there synergies to be found as we create a virtual international leadership program for emerging women leaders in Family Medicine”?

A Physician Assistant (PA) is an integral part of our health care system. PAs extend physician services and work within a collaborative team-based model under the supervision of a licensed physician to improve patient care, wait times, and help promote access to health care services. The scope of practice for a PA is determined by their supervising physician, but may include: patient interviews, physical examinations, communicating diagnoses, ordering diagnostic tests, counselling patients, recommendations for treatment plans, performing procedures, and assisting in surgery. This session aims to discuss the role of a PA, what training they have had, how to incorporate a PA in your family medicine team, the benefits and the day-to-day considerations, and how to navigate the MOH Career Start Program.

Description:COVID-19 has resulted in a worsening of mental and physical health and a backlog of missed preventive and chronic disease care. Family physicians need data and supports to help them take a proactive, population-based approach to COVID-19 recovery. The CareCanvas dashboard, developed by the department of Family and Community Medicine at U of T, is an interactive web-based dashboard that summarizes multiple aspects of practice data from your electronic medical record. The dashboard provides physicians with a practice overview and patient-level information on chronic disease and preventive care. For example, physicians can use the dashboard to identify which of their patients with high blood pressure have not been seen in the last year, and then download a list of these patients. Any physician who contributes data to UTOPIAN (the University of Toronto Practice Based Research Network) can receive their own personalized dashboard.
During this workshop, physicians will have the opportunity to learn how to navigate the dashboard, understand the data, and take a practical approach to using it to enhance patient care and catch up on the backlog of missed care due to Covid. There will be an opportunity for hands-on learning through direct use of a sample dashboard. Participants will break into groups, work through the data, choose where to focus efforts, and make decisions on how they might improve care within the realities of their clinical contexts. The facilitators will also share ideas for using the CareCanvas dashboard for proactive preventative care.

Description:
Collaborative mental health care (CMHC) is an evidence-based model that improves outcomes for primary care patients. In this interactive workshop, we will review the evidence for CMHC and explore current and potential models across the DFCM sites. We will consider exemplary models in other relevant contexts, and how to optimize CMHC for marginalized populations. A collaborative panel of facilitators will guide interactive case discussions. Practical tips and tools will be provided and participants will have opportunity to share their local experiences and reflections. Pearls for teaching our learners within CMHC models will also be shared. Suggestions for how to improve and adapt CMHC across the DFCM will be gathered to take back to the Mental Health and Addictions Division. -
